Seeing the deep suffering of human war, there is no escaping the pain of this planet:
"Happy Xmas (War is Over)" - John Lennon:
Feeling this, seeing this, we should be kind to ourselves. Recalling human suffering, let us all grow up and stop denying inner pain. Let us be real, towards ourselves and in all our relations.

Mike Stern Band featuring Richard Bona, Dave Weckl and Bob Franceschini Event Date & Time: 2012-02-28 19:30:00 In a career that spans three decades and a discography that includes more than a dozen eclectic and innovative recordings, six-time GRAMMY nominee Mike Stern has established himself as one of the premier jazz and jazz-fusion guitarists and composers of his generation. Born in Boston in January 1953, Stern grew up in Washington, DC, then returned to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music. After college, he got his start as a guitar player with Blood, Sweat & Tears at age 22. Following a brief stint with Billy Cobhams powerhouse fusion band from 1979 to 1980, he moved to New York City, where he was recruited by Miles Davis to play a key role in Miles celebrated comeback band of 1981 (which also included bassist Marcus Miller, drummer Al Foster, percussionist Mino Cinelu and saxophonist Bill Evans). During his three-year period with Miles, Stern appeared on three recordings with the jazz maestro Man with the Horn, Star People and the live We Want Miles. He toured with Jaco Pastorius Word of Mouth Band from 1983 through 1985 and returned to Miles lineup for a second tour of duty that lasted close to a year. In 1985, Stern recorded Neesh, his first recording as a leader, for the Japan-based Trio label.
Quitting smoking is one of the easiest or the hardest things that a person can do. For some who are not obsessed with smoking, quitting can be a cinch. For other, quitting can be like driving on a highway to misery and depression that smoking seems to be the only thing that keeps them alive and kicking.
This is why nowadays, there are a lot of people who are using electronic cigarette starter kits to get their daily dose of smokes without causing a long-term problem with their health and well-being. An electronic cigarette kit is a small device set that you can assemble and would somehow resemble a cigarette. It has all of the physical attributes of a cigarette, without the health risks that you can get from a conventional smoke.

Liberties Of A Dilettante Golf Player

Only a golfer is capable of understanding the game of golf in every sense. If the statement were to be true then it can also not be ignored that mere golf lovers or casual golf players do not get the essence of the game. Most golf players are busy training and practicing the game to reach perfection. But, you a golf fan or casual player have the liberty to delve into many nooks and corners of the world of golf that a serious player does not have the time to explore.
You have the liberty to discover a lot of material on the game and brush up the theoretical part of the game before holding a golf club. You can go to stores at leisure and get the right type of equipment for your game. You do not have the restrains that a professional golf player might face.
]]>
You can go online and experiment with new things and leisurely spend weekends without worrying about winning the next match against another golf champion. You have the freedom to sit and relax. The pressure that a golf player faces before going to the various golf courses for the matches around the world is not felt by an amateur and casual player like you. You can go for tours, whereby you not only enjoy a comfortable stay but also a wonderful game of golf along with the stay.
Most of all while, the serious golfers have to be on a strict regime and follow strict instructions and plan everything, you have no such obligation to follow any such strict regime or anything, for that matter, for the game. A casual player usually chooses to play the game as and when he/she likes without having the compulsion of a match. The main reason is that the game is just a hobby for such people.
But for a golfer and a serious one at that takes the game as a profession and so has to attend to it just as any other lawyer, doctor, or clerk religiously attends to his/her work. It is understood that when a professional golf player holds a golf club, he/she holds it to make a definite shot that will help him win.
Truthfully I have never had the opportunity to have authentic Chicago-style deep dish pizza. The closest I've ever come is the deep dish pizza from the Uno's chain (which is fabulous! by the way). So, unfortunately I couldn't tell you how this homemade recipe held up to the real thing. I do know that the people at Cook's Illustrated did put a lot of time and thought into this recipe. How can I be sure exactly? Because this recipe is too complex for it not to be excessively thought out. And I don't mean to scare you off from trying this recipe by labeling it as "complex". But even I think that it was more work than necessary… I took it as a challenge though! I'm sure there are a few of you out there that are just like me and find these types of recipes to be fascinating. A part of you just can not rest until you've conquered them! I hear ya. That's why I had to go through with making my own homemade chicago-style deep dish pizza. I had to prove it to myself that I could do it. Mission complete.
Now, on to more specifics about this particular recipe. The outcome? Well, it's a little bit complicated… see, I'm from NY. Not the city! But still… our pizza is thin and flat. Cheese on top. Toppings on top. Pretty standard stuff. Personally, I enjoy deep dish pizza. I just do not prefer it to what we have for pizza. And don't even get me started on my poor Husband. He's a really good sport about trying a few things that I make that he wouldn't normally have anything to do with. But this? Can't say he was very happy about having to eat it for dinner. I knew I had blown it when the words "and the cheese is on the bottom" came out of my mouth while I was explaining the difference to him. Yeaaaaah, he was not at all okay with that. He ate it, because it was still good. But he wasn't happy and he didn't like that I called it pizza. And even though, I agree with him that the cheese belongs on top, I thought the pizza was delicious.

Somebody asked the other day " Division of Statistics Initiatives, what is it?
To tell the truth, I am not exactly sure. Its existence was unknown to me until the Planning Director informed me a development application had been referred to the division during the application process.
I was aware there was one at the Region in the CAO's office . Aurora's CAO was its manager prior to appointment here.
But we all know the value of statistics. Anything can be argued ..
The town's last police chief was particularly fond of statistics.
We had a department fourteen strong. There was a murder one year. None the next. According to statistics, that was a hundred per cent reduction in the murder rate.Naturally reduction by one hundred per cent in the murder rate was attributed to excellent police work..

Earlier today we posted a series of photos on the themes of Abandonment and Urban Decay (uplifting stuff wasn't it). I thought it might make a good theme for this weeks photography challenge too.
While not everyone will have an atmospheric abandoned factory to race out and photograph – hopefully it's a theme that with a little imagination everyone can participate in.

This is pretty amazing and I have reported here before about 3D printing in healthcare with prosthetics being printed. The post below goes back to 2010 when the 3d Prosthetics were announced and the price seems to be right and perhaps as the technology evolves they could even be lower priced today.

Probably one of the most interesting videos with printing was to watch an organ be printed. The link below has more on that area.

It was a long slog to the government's mortgage abuse settlement with top banks, one in which officials slept in their offices and worked round the clock. And yet, a consumer advocate looking out for those who lost homes to foreclosure can only muster an "it's okay."
You don't need an expert to tell you how little of a dent the $25 billion deal makes in a mortgage morass that President Obama reminded us is one of the biggest drags on the economy. It took 16 months to get to a settlement that helps roughly 1 million borrowers, while 11 million Americans owe more money that what their homes are worth. People who lost their homes to foreclosures will get payments of $2,000. Home prices, meanwhile, are still 33 percent lower than 2006.
It's a lot of work for a little relief. But if there is one constituent that walks away satisfied it has to be the state of California. Attorney General Kamala Harris held out for a better deal right to the end. What she won was 45 percent of the settlement spoils, and she only came to the table with a third of the nation's foreclosures in her portfolio. It pays to play hard to get.
All my life I have been playing Sudoku on a puzzle book. Now that we have our very own computer, I was amazed to find out that it can actually be played online. At first, I was dumfounded. I have never played any puzzle game on computer before so you can only imagine how long it took me to figure out how to play Sudoku.

how does law help government to govern the country
Why Mitt Romney's Electability is Not Inevitable
After many months of getting a pass, it seems that the other candidates are willing to finally start hitting Governor Mitt Romney on his major weakness: The Massachusetts Health Care Insurance Reform Law. The bill, known by most as Romneycare, is (as we all have been saying for many moons) the basis for the much maligned Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, otherwise affectionately known as Obamacare.
I've been in endless debates and discussions with Romney supporters and surrogates for some time now as they paint a beautiful picture of the ultimate State's Rights battle. They claim that Romneycare vs Obamacare isn't about socialized medicine vs the free market. They say it's actually the core of the Federalist struggle and that Romney will channel Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and march onto the capital steps, fulfilling the dreams and desires of tea partiers nationwide by finally standing up and saying, "Enough is enough! Let the state's make their decisions Obama! Your days of tyranny are at an end!" And they all rejoiced.
Yet, continually when Romney is approached on this subject in the debates with fellow Republicans, he seems incapable of defending any other point and seems befuddled at the idea that there might be more than one part about Obamacare that American's had wholly objected to. For him, it's all about the mandate.
But it's important to keep in mind, Mitt Romney does not object to the concept of mandates. Far from it actually.
After worrying through the issue of John Lewis, sharks, and the slave trade, I was curious how Virginia history textbooks handle the issue. (This was in part provoked by the fact that one of the disgruntled Internet commenters I quoted mentioned that his own newphew's history textbook got it all wrong.)
The above image is from Five Ponds Press's Our America: To 1865, and to everyone's relief, I'm sure, there is no mention of sharks. Or of John Lewis. However, what is there is not entirely accurate. Here is what students (fifth-graders?) are told about the slave trade:
The Enslaved African Americans
Between 1700 and 1800 more than ten million Africans were dragged to North and South America. About half a million ended up in England's American colonies—mostly in the South—where slave labor became a way of life.
On Sunday, I explained what a sink fund is – and how it helps to stretch our budget. Today I want to explain how – and where – we save our sink funds.
When I started to investigate where to "keep" our sink funds (assuming that under the mattress wasn't a great idea), I knew there were several characteristics I was looking for in a savings account.
1. An account that would be separate from our main checking account. Some people successfully keep all their money in the same account and have the self-discipline not to dip into money that isn't allocated. I, however, didn't trust us that much. Keeping the money separate is visually and practically important to me.
2. An account that would allow me to have sub-accounts. I didn't want to have to set up a dozen different accounts. That would have been way too much virtual paperwork to stay on top of. I wanted one account with partitions between my money – so I could shut off my Emergency Fund money from the Home Sink Fund money. (Again, getting back to #1 – separation is good for us!)
3. I wanted to earn a bit of interest, but "making money" on my Sink Funds was NOT a priority. Sink Funds are money with an intended and immediately foreseeable purpose. Making money through investments requires risk. I was not willing to risk our Sink Funds.
When I added 1 + 2 + 3, I ended up back at ING.
Yup, the same online bank that we use for our "virtual envelopes" checking account. Here's why ING made the most sense for us:
While Tony Abbott has stated he will repeal the Carbon Pricing Scheme when elected, the Carbon Pricing Scheme will nevertheless become effective on 1 July 2012. What does this mean for businesses?
Around 500 businesses will be directly affected by the Carbon Pricing Scheme. These are companies which emit more than 25,000 tonnes of CO2. They will be charged a price for each tonne of carbon, and be mandated to further reporting and compliance obligations.
Knowledge Is A Universal Natural Resource - And Locking It Up Hurts Everyone
One of the more important points in understanding some of the fights over the ridiculousness of today's copyright and patent laws is to recognize how knowledge (information) is a natural resource. It is the input that makes other great things. Economist Paul Romer's famous research really showed how knowledge and information as a resource is what creates economic growth. Once you recognize that fact, you begin to run into problems when you think about locking up that natural resource. Think of other natural resources. Do we think the world is better off if there's a greater supply of each of those? An abundance? If we have an abundance of wheat, that's a good thing. If we have an abundance of energy, that's a good thing. There may be side effects of such abundances, but the overall abundance is something worth cherishing.
The problem, however, comes when you have a new abundance where once there was scarcity. And that's because anywhere there's a scarcity, someone has built a business model based on that very scarcity. But that is a business model issue. Years ago, most economies rejected the idea of mercantilism, where governments would purposely build up monopolies and artificial scarcities, because of the realization that, in the long run, everyone was better off with a competitive market. The guy who had the sugar monopoly may have hated it -- but everyone else was much, much better off.
And, so, we go back to knowledge and information. Unlike most other resources, knowledge is not just abundant... it is infinite. As Thomas Jefferson once famously wrote:
No, don't feel alone most people don't even get the continent right. It borders The Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania in East Africa (here).
I went to Burundi in partnership with Emerge Poverty Free. The idea was to follow their work across the country and document it for fundraising campaigns and potentially for an exhibition back in the U.K.
One of the most exciting projects that the charity is running works with the Batwa (Pygmys) that have always lived rurally but have been displaced in recent years. The Batwa, are generally seen by other ethnic groups (Hutu/Tutsi) as inferior.
What do we want from a scientific explanation? Is there a single answer to this question, or is the field of explanation fundamentally heterogeneous, perhaps by discipline or by research community? Do biologists explain outcomes differently from physicists or sociologists? Is a good explanation within the Anglo-American traditions of science also a good explanation in the German or Chinese research communities? Is the idea of a scientific explanation paradigm-dependent? For several decades in the twentieth century there was a dominant answer to this question, that was an outgrowth of the tradition of logical positivism and examples from the natural sciences. This theory of explanation focused on the idea of subsumption of an event or regularity under a higher-level set of laws. The deductive-nomological theory of explanation specified that an outcome is explained when we have produced a deductively valid argument with premises that include at least one general law and that lead to a description of the event as conclusion. Carl Hempel was the most prominent advocate for this theory (Aspects of Scientific Explanation), but it was widely accepted throughout the philosophy of science in the 1950s and 1960s. The "covering law" model was a core dogma for the philosophy of science for several decades. The D-N theory was subject to many kinds of criticisms, including the obvious point that much explanation involves phenomena that are probabilistic rather than deterministic. Hempel introduced the inductive version of the D-N model to cover probabilistic-statistical explanation, along these lines. An argument provides a scientific explanation of E if it provides at least one probabilistic law and a set of background conditions such that, given the law and conditions, E is highly probable. This model was described as the "Inductive-Statistical" model (I-S model). Wesley Salmon'sScientific Explanation and the Causal Structure of the World falls within this tradition but offers important refinements, including his formal definition of causal relevance. In each case the motivation for the theory of explanation is a plausible one: we explain an event when we show how it was necessary [or highly probable] in the circumstances, given existing conditions and relevant laws of nature.!doctype>
